WhatsApp Announces ‘View Once’ Feature for Disappearing Voice Messages

In a recent update, WhatsApp, the popular Meta-owned messaging platform, has introduced the ‘View Once’ feature for voice messages. Building upon the success of the ‘View Once’ functionality for text, photos, and videos introduced in 2021, WhatsApp is expanding this privacy-centric feature to include audio messages. Users can now send voice messages that automatically disappear after the recipient has listened to them, offering a new layer of privacy for sensitive conversations.

WhatsApp ensures that these ‘View Once’ voice messages, like their text and media counterparts, are protected with end-to-end encryption by default. The one-time playback feature is marked with a distinctive icon, indicating that the voice message can only be played once. This feature is expected to be particularly useful for sharing confidential information, making plans, or discussing sensitive matters where a single playback suffices.

After the recipient listens to the voice clip, it automatically disappears from the chat, replaced with a notification indicating that it has been “opened.” The message will vanish if not opened within 14 days. Importantly, users cannot forward, save, star, or share voice messages with the ‘View Once’ media feature enabled.

This latest update reflects WhatsApp’s ongoing commitment to privacy innovation. As the ‘View Once’ feature for voice messages rolls out globally over the coming days, users can expect a more secure and controlled messaging experience. This development aligns with WhatsApp’s broader strategy to provide reliable and private communication solutions for its vast user base.
