Meta Launches Edits, a Free Video Editing App Similar to CapCut
Meta has rolled out a new standalone video editing app called Edits, built specifically for mobile-first creators looking for an all-in-one solution. While it may look like a response to ByteDance’s CapCut, Meta is positioning Edits as a creator-centric workspace rather than a casual tool. The app quietly debuted across iOS and Android platforms and aims to simplify every stage of video production.
Built for Creators, Not Just Instagram
Unlike Meta’s existing tools inside Instagram or Facebook, Edits is designed to help creators work on projects independently of any single platform. Users can create videos of up to 10 minutes, access real-time insights like skip rate, and export content without watermarks—making it flexible for distribution across platforms.

Edits includes a professional-grade timeline editor, clip-level trimming, green screen support, subject cutouts, transitions, and AI-generated animations. The app also offers tools for managing projects, jotting down creative notes, and reviewing performance metrics.
One of its standout capabilities is the integration of real-time feedback, allowing creators to better understand how their content is performing—something Meta hopes will make Edits more than just another video editor.
Upcoming Tools and Enhancements
Looking ahead, Meta plans to introduce features like keyframe editing for precise motion control, collaboration tools for team projects, and a richer suite of customizations—think new fonts, dynamic text animations, and access to royalty-free audio. AI-driven aesthetic changes are also on the roadmap, showing Meta’s investment in helping creators automate and accelerate their workflow.
Although it shares many similarities with CapCut, Edits is not just a clone. Meta has emphasized that the app is tailored for serious creators rather than the general public. Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, hinted that while the apps may look alike at launch, Edits is set to evolve into something far broader and creator-focused.
In essence, Edits is Meta’s clearest step yet toward becoming a top destination for mobile video creators, beyond the Instagram ecosystem.
