Meta announces HD video calls, AI-powered backgrounds, noise suppression, and hands-free Siri integration for Messenger

Meta is enhancing Facebook Messenger’s functionality with a series of updates to improve video and audio calls, introduce innovative AI-powered personalization, and add hands-free capabilities. These changes aim to make Messenger a more versatile and engaging platform for its millions of users.

AI Backgrounds for Video Calls

Building on its AI-generated chat themes, Messenger now allows users to customize video call backgrounds with AI-generated visuals. These dynamic backgrounds can express emotions or add excitement to calls. To use this feature, tap the effects icon in the sidebar during a video call and select “Backgrounds.”

HD Video Calling

Messenger is introducing HD video calling for higher-quality, clearer visuals. HD will be enabled by default on WiFi calls, and users can activate it for cellular data via the call settings. This upgrade ensures an enhanced communication experience that feels more lifelike.

The update brings hands-free calling and messaging through Siri integration. Users can say commands like “Hey Siri, call [name] on Messenger” or “Hey Siri, send a message to [name] on Messenger” to initiate calls or send messages without touching their devices.

Meta revealed that users worldwide spend over 7 billion minutes daily on calls through Facebook and Messenger. These new features reinforce Messenger’s position as a key player in global communication, offering enhanced usability and personalization.
