Google is testing a new feature that lets you start WhatsApp video calls directly from Google Messages!
Google Messages is reportedly testing a new feature that will allow users to initiate WhatsApp video calls directly from the app. This move could significantly streamline communication by reducing the need to switch between apps.
WhatsApp Integration in Google Messages
Currently, Google Messages lets users start video calls via Google Meet. However, Google is exploring the option of prioritizing WhatsApp for video calls, given its widespread popularity. If the recipient has WhatsApp installed, the call will go through WhatsApp. Otherwise, Google Messages will default to Google Meet, ensuring users always have a video calling option.
This integration is part of Google’s broader effort to enhance its messaging platform. Over the past few years, Google Messages has received major updates, solidifying its position as the company’s primary messaging app. Tying it with a widely used app like WhatsApp could be a game-changer, as previous integrations with Google Meet haven’t gained as much traction.
How the Feature Works
Google Messages currently displays a call and video call icon at the top-right of individual chats. Tapping the video call icon starts a Google Meet video call. If the user doesn’t have Google Meet installed, the app prompts them to install it before proceeding.
However, based on recent reports from Android Authority and Assemble Debug, an upcoming update to Google Messages (version 20250131) will introduce an additional WhatsApp video call option. Users who have WhatsApp installed will see a new pop-up when they tap the video call icon, giving them the option to place a call via WhatsApp.
If the recipient also has WhatsApp, the call will initiate instantly. If they don’t, WhatsApp will not appear as an option, and the call will default back to Google Meet. This streamlined process eliminates the need to leave Google Messages just to start a video call in another app.
Feature Currently Limited to One-on-One Chats
At present, this feature is only designed for private conversations. In group chats, Google Messages still defaults to Google Meet for video calls. However, it remains to be seen whether WhatsApp integration will extend to group calls in future updates.
Users may also be given the choice between WhatsApp and Google Meet before placing a call, which would allow greater flexibility. Google has yet to confirm whether this option will be available when the feature officially rolls out.
Potential Benefits of WhatsApp Integration
The inclusion of WhatsApp video calling in Google Messages could simplify communication by:
– Reducing the need to switch between multiple apps.
– Offering a more seamless video calling experience.
– Making Google Messages more appealing to users who already rely on WhatsApp for communication.
Additionally, it raises the question of whether Google will expand this integration beyond video calls. If WhatsApp video calls become an option, it would make sense for voice calls over WhatsApp to be included as well, further unifying communication channels within Google Messages.
When Will This Feature Roll Out?
There’s no official timeline for when this feature will be widely available. Since it was discovered in an APK teardown, it’s likely still in the testing phase. Google may introduce it in beta versions of Google Messages first to gather feedback before a full public release.
For now, users will need to wait for further updates from Google. If this feature does roll out successfully, it could mark a significant step toward deeper third-party app integration within Google’s ecosystem.
