WatchOS 10.4 Update Fixes Major issues

Published

on

Apple has recently launched watchOS 10.4 for Apple Watch users, following a minor update in watchOS 10.3. This latest version introduces various new features and significant adjustments.

Among the additions are 28 new emojis, featuring a lime, shaking heads, a phoenix, and four gender-neutral family emojis designed as silhouettes. Notably, the majority of the new emojis focus on skin tone modifiers and gender variants, applicable in iMessage and various messaging apps on your Apple Watch.

In addition, watchOS 10.4 introduces a new adjustment for Apple Vision Pro users. Given that both devices rely on double-tap gestures, you now have the option to activate the “Ignore Double Tap” setting when using Apple’s spatial computer. Apple describes this feature as temporarily disregarding the double-tap gesture while using Vision Pro.

For context, controlling Apple Vision Pro involves pinching your fingers, and double-tapping your fingers is also the control mechanism for Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. Fortunately, owners of both the newer Apple Watches and Vision Pro won’t encounter this issue any longer.

Apple has also addressed the “ghost touch” bug affecting certain Apple Watch 9 and Apple Watch Ultra users in the latest software update, now available for download. This issue, where taps and swipes register without actual touch, initially surfaced in older models in 2020 and reappeared in Series 9 models in early February. The installation of WatchOS 10.4 is expected to resolve this problem, eliminating false touches on the display, as stated in the release notes.

As per the memo, the false-touch problem might have led to erratic screen behavior, unintended phone calls, or difficulty entering device passcodes on the impacted Apple Watch models, significantly affecting the user experience with these latest devices. We are relieved that a fix is now being rolled out.

In watchOS 10.4, Siri enhancements include the ability to wake the personal assistant by simply saying “Siri” instead of “Hey Siri.” Additionally, Siri can now read incoming messages in various languages, such as Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, and more.

In a bid to leverage its vast user base across multiple platforms, Meta has initiated trials of its AI chatbot, Meta AI, on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger. The company, formerly known as Facebook, is conducting these tests in India and select regions of Africa, signaling its ambition to scale up AI services across its ecosystem.

This move follows Meta’s announcement in February 2023 outlining plans to explore chatbots and other AI tools. Notably, India represents a crucial market for Meta, with over 500 million users on its Facebook and WhatsApp platforms combined, making it the company’s largest market.

With smartphone adoption rapidly increasing in developing markets like India and Africa, Meta aims to engage these burgeoning audiences with innovative AI services. Users in these regions have begun encountering Meta AI within their WhatsApp chats, indicating the company’s efforts to penetrate these markets.

Meta AI, unveiled in September 2023, is a multifunctional assistant powered by generative AI technology. It can respond to user queries within conversations and even generate photorealistic images from text prompts. Evidence suggests that it’s also being utilized for search queries on Instagram.

Despite its late entry into the AI landscape compared to rivals like OpenAI, Meta is now aggressively advancing its AI strategy. Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief AI scientist, acknowledged the unexpected public interest in AI chatbots, which has prompted the company to embrace AI development more openly.

Meta’s push into AI is driven by several factors. Firstly, it aims to retain users who increasingly expect AI features in their apps. Secondly, investor confidence hinges on Meta’s commitment to future technologies like AI. Lastly, as a leader in tech innovation, Meta seeks to maintain its reputation by staying ahead in AI development.

The integration of Meta AI into WhatsApp and Instagram, which boast billions of monthly active users collectively, presents a significant opportunity for Meta to expand its AI reach. By tapping into this vast audience, Meta could potentially outshine its competitors in AI capabilities.

In a related announcement, Meta revealed plans to launch Llama 3, the next iteration of its open-source large language model, within the coming month. This move underscores Meta’s dedication to advancing AI technologies across its platforms and solidifying its position in the evolving digital landscape.
