WhatsApp Boosts Privacy: Introducing Cross-Device Chat Lock

WhatsApp continues to prioritize user privacy, introducing features designed to protect sensitive conversations. Among these features is Chat Lock, which allows users to shield specific chats with an additional layer of security. This feature prevents unauthorized access to private messages, even if the phone is unlocked or shared.

Currently, Chat Lock is limited to the primary device where WhatsApp is first installed, leaving linked devices like WhatsApp Web or companion tablets vulnerable. However, an upcoming update is set to address this limitation.

According to findings by WABetaInfo within the latest Android beta, Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, is finalizing an update that extends Chat Lock functionality to all linked devices. This enhancement represents a significant boost in user privacy, allowing users to protect specific chats on their main phone and ensure they are secure on all other devices where their WhatsApp account is active. This update empowers users to maintain consistent privacy control across their digital ecosystem.

With the introduction of cross-device Chat Lock, a new authentication process will be implemented. Users will set up a unique secret code on their primary device, which will be required to access locked chats on any linked device. Initially, fingerprint unlocking will not be available for linked devices, with the secret code serving as the primary method of authentication. Users will also have the option to create a secret code that incorporates emojis, adding an extra layer of personalization.

The initial discovery of this enhanced security measure occurred in April, and WABetaInfo’s recent findings confirm its rollout to Android beta users. This suggests that a broader release to all users in the stable version of the app can be expected in the coming weeks.

This upcoming update underscores WhatsApp’s dedication to providing robust privacy features for its users. By expanding Chat Lock functionality to all linked devices, WhatsApp enables users to maintain control over their most sensitive communications, ensuring their privacy remains intact across their digital landscape.
