Telegram Integrates Microsoft’s Copilot AI Chatbot

Microsoft has expanded its generative AI-powered tool, Copilot, to the popular instant messaging app, Telegram. Currently in its beta phase, Copilot for Telegram offers users the ability to interact with the AI as if they were having a regular conversation with a friend. This development signifies a noteworthy step in integrating advanced AI capabilities into widely-used social platforms.

What Copilot for Telegram Offers

Copilot for Telegram is designed to handle a wide range of queries. From providing general knowledge answers like “What movie should I watch?” to more specific information such as “What baseball game is on right now?”, the AI chatbot offers a versatile tool for users. Accessible for free, users can engage with Copilot on both mobile devices and desktop by searching for its username, @CopilotOfficialBot. However, it does require users to share their phone numbers to activate the service.

Features and Limitations

While Copilot on Telegram brings many of the familiar functionalities available on other Microsoft platforms like Microsoft 365 and Teams, it does have some limitations. Notably, the chatbot currently cannot generate images and is restricted to text-based interactions. Despite this, it can perform a variety of tasks, including internet searches, movie suggestions, workout routine generation, coding assistance, and language translation.

Additionally, users should be aware of the daily limit of 30 conversational turns, meaning the interaction between a user and Copilot is capped at 30 messages within a 24-hour period. This limitation helps manage resources and ensures equitable access for all users.

The Trend of AI in Messaging Apps

Microsoft’s move to bring Copilot to Telegram is part of a broader trend of integrating AI chatbots into messaging platforms. Other tech giants are making similar strides. Meta, for example, is testing Meta AI across Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. Google’s Gemini, another rival to Copilot, enables generative AI capabilities within Google Messages on Android devices. Similarly, Snapchat has incorporated ChatGPT to enhance its AI chatbot interactions.

How to Get Started

To start using Copilot on Telegram, users need to search for “Microsoft Copilot” in the Telegram search bar, select the appropriate bot, and share their phone number. Once set up, users can enjoy a range of AI-powered conversational experiences, albeit with the current text-only limitation.

Looking Ahead

The introduction of Copilot on Telegram underscores Microsoft’s ambition to embed its AI tools across various third-party services. This integration could pave the way for further AI advancements in other social and messaging applications, potentially transforming the way users interact with technology on a daily basis. As AI continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how these integrations develop and enhance user experiences across different platforms.
