Proton Unveils Secure, Encrypted Alternative to Google Docs

Swiss privacy company Proton has introduced Proton Docs, a new end-to-end encrypted (E2E) document creation, editing, and collaboration platform. Marketed as a “secure alternative to Google Drive and Docs,” Proton Docs integrates seamlessly with Proton’s cloud storage product, Drive, ensuring that not even Proton can access user content or metadata.

Proton Docs offers robust security features, with user data stored on Swiss servers protected by stringent Swiss privacy laws. This launch follows Proton’s acquisition of the encrypted notes app Standard Notes, integrating popular features like markdown support, rich text, code blocks, and checklists.

Key Features of Proton Docs:

Rich Text Editing: Advanced formatting options for professional and polished document creation and editing.

File Compatibility: Open and edit documents in multiple formats, including Microsoft .docx, for seamless integration.

Comments and Collaboration: Efficiently add, reply to, and resolve comments to foster a collaborative environment.

Embed Images: Enhance documents by embedding images without compromising speed.

Collaborative Cursors and Presence: Real-time collaborative cursors to see who is viewing the document, making teamwork intuitive.

Invite Collaborators: Invite anyone to collaborate securely, with non-Proton users prompted to create a free account.

Emphasizing privacy, Proton ensures every document, keystroke, and cursor movement is end-to-end encrypted in real-time, maintaining strict privacy and preventing data harvesting. Currently available as a web application, Proton Docs will eventually be offered as a dedicated app across platforms.

Proton Drive, which includes a calendar, file storage, a password manager, and more, requires a free Proton Drive account for access to Docs. The rollout begins today, with availability extending to all users over the next few days.

Proton’s stance on privacy positions Proton Docs as a unique solution in a market where popular products often neglect user privacy. Recommended for sectors like healthcare, media, finance, and legal, Proton Docs combines advanced formatting and image embedding options with secure collaboration tools. Users can invite others to view and edit documents, with real-time visibility of participant presence and cursor placements to avoid edit conflicts.

While Proton has not announced plans to develop analogues of other Google Workspace apps, its expanding suite of products includes email services, VPN, an encrypted calendar, and a password manager, signaling a broadening horizon for secure productivity tools. Proton Docs promises to uphold the company’s commitment to privacy, offering an encrypted alternative to mainstream document management solutions.

Xiaomi Unveils Redmi K70 Ultra Champion Edition with Lamborghini Design

Xiaomi is gearing up for the release of the Redmi K70 Ultra on July 19, and in a recent announcement, the company has revealed a special variant—the Redmi K70 Ultra Champion Edition. This limited edition model is inspired by the Lamborghini Essenza SCV12 supercar, featuring a unique design that sets it apart from the standard version.

The Redmi K70 Ultra Champion Edition sports a striking design in green and yellow color options, with an aggressive aesthetic that echoes the dynamic lines of the Lamborghini supercar. The Squadra Corse logo and golden rings around the camera cut-outs add to its premium appeal.

This special edition follows in the footsteps of the previous K70 Pro Champion Edition, incorporating the Y-shaped logo of the Essenza SCV12 and the SQUADRA CORSE racing shield. The focus of the Champion Edition is largely aesthetic, offering a unique blend of high-performance racing design to enthusiasts and fans.

While Xiaomi has not disclosed detailed specifications for the Champion Edition, it is expected to share core hardware features with the standard Redmi K70 Ultra, possibly with enhanced memory options.

Core Features of the Redmi K70 Ultra

The standard Redmi K70 Ultra is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 9300+ chipset and boasts a 1.5K resolution OLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate. The screen features 3840Hz PWM dimming, which Xiaomi claims provides superior eye protection in low-light conditions. This display is co-developed with TCL, though its exact size remains undisclosed.

In the camera department, the Redmi K70 Ultra is equipped with a 50MP Sony IMX906 primary sensor, likely supported by an 8MP ultra-wide sensor and a 2MP macro sensor. The phone is the first in the Redmi series to use Xiaomi’s self-developed AISP imaging algorithm to enhance overall camera performance.

A notable highlight of the Redmi K70 Ultra is the inclusion of Xiaomi’s Pengpai T1 signal enhancement chip, which promises a 12% boost in WiFi performance, a 20% improvement in GPS accuracy, and a significant 58% increase in 5G signal strength. The phone also features Xiaomi’s in-house Surge P2 chip for fast charging, G1 for power management, and D1 for independent display processing.

The Redmi K70 Ultra is powered by a 5500mAh battery with support for 120W fast charging and carries an IP68 certification for dust and water resistance.

Special Edition and Availability

The Redmi K70 Ultra Champion Edition, designed in collaboration with Lamborghini, draws inspiration from the Huracán Super Trofeo EVO2, a car designed for the Lamborghini Super Trofeo racing series. The phone’s design mirrors the angles and carbon fiber aesthetics of the supercar, making it a standout piece in Xiaomi’s lineup.

Xiaomi’s collaboration with Lamborghini is not new, as seen with the previous special edition of the Redmi K70 Pro, which was styled after the Essenza SCV12 hypercar.

The full details of the Redmi K70 Ultra and the Champion Edition will be unveiled on July 19. While the release of the Lamborghini-inspired model might take a few months post-announcement, its unique design and high-performance features are expected to attract both tech enthusiasts and fans of high-end automotive design.

Pricing and availability details for both models will be announced at the launch event. The Redmi K70 Ultra Champion Edition promises to be a compelling choice for Lamborghini fans and users seeking a distinctive, high-performance smartphone.

Apple Releases Public Betas for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia

Apple has released the first public betas for its upcoming operating systems: iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, watchOS 11, and tvOS 18. Having previously released three developer betas for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, Apple is now preparing to bring the final release versions to the public this fall.

The public betas are generally more stable than the developer betas, with most major bugs resolved. However, Apple advises users to avoid installing beta software on their primary devices. Those interested in testing the new betas should back up their data and enroll in the Apple Beta Software Program.

Public beta testers can download the iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 updates by opening the Settings app, navigating to General, selecting Software Update, and choosing the iOS 18 Public Beta option. Given that beta software can still be buggy, it’s best to install it on secondary devices or ensure a backup is available in case a reversion to iOS 17 is necessary.

New Features in iOS 18

LliOS 18 introduces “Apple Intelligence,” a suite of AI features integrated into the operating system. Although these features are not available in the current beta, Apple has promised functionalities such as text rewriting, custom image generation, and an enhanced Siri. These features will be exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro models and newer M-series iPads upon their launch.

Additionally, iOS 18 offers significant customization options, including the ability to rearrange app icons anywhere on the home screen and apply these arrangements to icons and widgets. The revamped Control Center allows users to pick and choose what elements to have front and center from the new Controls Gallery.

The Messages app now supports scheduling texts, using any emoji for Tapback, and sending messages via satellite. Users can add text effects to any word, phrase, or emoji, and apply bold and italic formatting. Apple has also introduced support for RCS for texts with Android users.

Safari can now summarize webpages and highlight important information at a glance. A new Passwords app makes it easier to access saved passwords and logins, and users can lock any app with Face ID or Touch ID.

Enhancements in iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia

Most of the updates in iOS 18 are also present in iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. The iPadOS 18 notably includes a new native Calculator app and enhanced multitasking features. Meanwhile, macOS Sequoia introduces the ability to mirror an iPhone on a Mac screen, among other improvements.

Looking ahead, Apple plans to roll out additional updates in the fall, including the full capabilities of Apple Intelligence.
