OpenAI Rolls Out Advanced Voice Mode for ChatGPT Plus Users
On Tuesday, OpenAI announced the gradual rollout of its Advanced Voice Mode for ChatGPT Plus users. This new feature, first unveiled at OpenAI’s Spring event in May, leverages the latest GPT-4o artificial intelligence model to deliver real-time, natural voice interactions. The Advanced Voice Mode enables seamless conversations, allowing users to interrupt and engage with the AI in a more lifelike manner. Additionally, the mode is designed to sense and respond to users’ emotions, enhancing the overall interaction experience.
The rollout of this feature has begun with a select group of ChatGPT Plus users, with a broader release expected by fall 2024. OpenAI’s statement highlighted the key advancements: “We’re starting to roll out advanced Voice Mode to a small group of ChatGPT Plus users. Advanced Voice Mode offers more natural, real-time conversations, allows you to interrupt anytime, and senses and responds to your emotions.”
Testing of GPT-4o’s voice capabilities involved over 100 external testers across 45 languages, providing valuable insights to refine the Advanced Voice experience. OpenAI plans to release a detailed report on GPT-4o’s capabilities, limitations, and safety evaluations in early August.
The initial rollout was delayed from late June to July, reflecting OpenAI’s dedication to maintaining high launch standards. The new voice capabilities address longstanding challenges in AI interactions, such as achieving natural conversation flow and responsiveness.
OpenAI’s push to integrate advanced voice features aligns with its strategy to remain competitive in the expanding AI sector. Additionally, the company is introducing a new search tool called SearchGPT, positioning itself as a competitor to Google in the search domain. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman explained, “We think there is room to make search much better than it is today. We are launching a new prototype called SearchGPT. We will learn from the prototype, make it better, and then integrate the tech into ChatGPT to make it real-time and maximally helpful.”
Furthermore, OpenAI has partnered with Reddit to integrate its content into ChatGPT, enhancing the chatbot’s capabilities and marking a deeper collaboration between the two companies. This partnership has led to a 12% rise in Reddit’s shares and is part of Reddit’s strategy to diversify its revenue sources.
While OpenAI’s demo of GPT-4o’s voice in May impressed many with its realistic audio responses, the feature shown—resembling Scarlett Johansson’s voice—was later removed following legal concerns. The Advanced Voice Mode now available to users includes four preset voices, with the demo voice no longer an option. OpenAI asserts that ChatGPT will not impersonate other individuals’ voices and will block any outputs that deviate from these preset voices.
As OpenAI continues to refine and expand its offerings, the Advanced Voice Mode represents a significant step in enhancing AI-human interaction. Users in the alpha group will receive notifications via the ChatGPT app and email with instructions on how to access the new feature.
