Microsoft Introduces Wireless Access to Android Files via Windows File Explorer

Microsoft has introduced a new feature that allows wireless access to all your Android device’s files directly from Windows File Explorer. This feature is currently being tested with users in the Windows Insider Program.
New Feature Roll-Out
Microsoft announced the new feature via a Windows Blog post, which also provides instructions on how to test the feature. This addition enhances the integration between Windows and Android, similar to previous features such as using Android as a webcam on Windows 11.
How It Works
Windows Insider users can now access their Android phone’s files directly within File Explorer using the beta version of the Link to Windows app. Once connected via Bluetooth, the phone appears in File Explorer like a USB device, allowing users to browse, copy, move, rename, and delete files seamlessly.
Requirements
To utilize this feature, users must have:
- A device registered in the Windows Insider Program
- The beta version of the Link to Windows app (version 1.24071 and higher) on their Android phone
- An Android device running version 11 or higher
- A PC running Windows 11
Activation Steps
For those in the beta program, the feature can be activated by going to Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Mobile Devices on their PC and enabling the option to show the phone in File Explorer.
Known Issues
The blog post also highlights some known issues during this test phase, such as deleted phone files going to a new Recycle Bin folder and some syncing problems. Microsoft encourages users to familiarize themselves with these bugs if they plan to try out the feature.
Future Availability
Although the feature is not yet available to all Windows 11 users, it is expected to roll out widely soon. Currently, it is accessible to users in the “Release Preview” version of the Windows Insider channels, indicating that a broader release is imminent.
Microsoft continues to improve Windows-Android integration, and this new feature is a significant step forward. By enabling wireless file access directly from Windows File Explorer, the company is making it easier for users to manage their files across devices. Keep an eye out for further updates as this feature becomes available to all Windows 11 users.
