Apple has introduced iOS 17.3 and iPadOS 17.3 for supported devices, bringing a notable security enhancement known as Stolen Device Protection. Unlike staggered releases seen in other platforms, Apple ensures that these updates are promptly available to all users.
The Stolen Device Protection feature adds an extra layer of security for devices that might be stolen. When activated, Face ID or Touch ID becomes mandatory for accessing saved passwords. Moreover, altering critical settings, such as the Apple ID password or device passcode, is subject to a security delay. Face ID or Touch ID is initially required, followed by an hour-long waiting period, and then additional successful biometric authentication.
This security measure addresses a longstanding need and adds a sensible layer of protection for users. Apple’s iOS 17.3 update also includes a new wallpaper, collaborative playlist features in Apple Music, AirPlay support for streaming content to select hotel room TVs, and optimized crash detection. The release reflects Apple’s commitment to both security and enhancing the user experience.
