HMD Skyline Launched

HMD Global has introduced the Skyline, a smartphone that breathes new life into the classic Nokia Lumia design while incorporating modern features. This device stands out not only for its nostalgic design but also for its impressive repairability and robust feature set.

Design and Build

The Skyline showcases a 6.5-inch FHD+ pOLED display with a 144 Hz refresh rate, protected by Gorilla Glass 3. The phone’s build includes a glass front and back with an aluminum frame, giving it a premium feel. It also boasts an IP54 rating, ensuring resistance to dust and water splashes.

Performance and Storage

Powered by the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 chipset, the Skyline offers smooth performance. It comes in configurations of 8 GB or 12 GB of RAM and 128 GB or 256 GB of internal storage, expandable via a microSD card for an additional 512 GB.

Camera System

The camera setup is another highlight. The rear features a triple camera system: a 108 MP main camera with OIS, a 50 MP 2x telephoto camera, and a 13 MP ultra-wide camera. For selfies, there’s a 50 MP front camera. HMD has integrated AI technology with its AI Capture Fusion to enhance photo detail and quality.

Battery and Charging

Equipped with a 4,600 mAh battery, the Skyline supports 33W wired charging and 15W magnetic wireless charging with Qi2 certification. Despite the phone’s advanced charging capabilities, it does not include an adapter in the box. However, HMD offers a 33W wall charger for £30 or a 30W dual-port adapter for £20.

Unique Features

One of the standout features of the Skyline is its Gen 2 repairability, allowing users to replace components such as the screen or battery at home. HMD has partnered with iFixit to provide tutorials and the necessary tools, making repairs straightforward with just a T3 Torx screwdriver and an opening pick.

The Skyline also includes a customizable button on the left side. By default, it triggers the torch, but it can be reprogrammed to activate HMD’s Detox Mode, a software feature designed to reduce digital distractions.

Software and Updates

Running on Android 14, the Skyline promises two years of OS updates and three years of security updates, ensuring long-term software support.

Pricing and Availability

The HMD Skyline is priced at $499 in the United States, €499 in Europe, and £399 in the United Kingdom. Replacement parts are also affordably priced, with the display at $95, battery cover at $30, battery at $25, and charging port at $20. The first purchase should include an iFixit fix kit, available for an additional $5.

The HMD Skyline combines a classic design with modern features and exceptional repairability, making it an attractive option for those seeking both nostalgia and cutting-edge technology.
