Truecaller Partners with Microsoft to Introduce AI-Powered Voice Cloning Feature

Is this the start of an AI takeover, or just the next step in technological innovation?

Truecaller, a widely known caller ID service, has recently unveiled a groundbreaking feature that leverages artificial intelligence to create a digital clone of users’ voices for answering calls. This new capability is part of a broader trend where AI technologies are replacing traditional voice agents with synthetic human voices.

Enhancing User Experience with AI

Truecaller’s AI Assistant, already equipped with features such as automatic call answering, message taking, and spam detection, is now stepping up its game. The latest enhancement allows users to train the AI Assistant to answer calls using a digital clone of their voice. Previously, users could only select from seven pre-set digital voices.

This new feature is made possible through a partnership with Microsoft, utilizing the tech giant’s Personal Voice technology, which was introduced in November as part of Azure AI Speech. This collaboration enables Truecaller’s AI Assistant to replicate users’ voices to greet and respond to callers.

Creating Your Digital Voice

To activate this feature, Truecaller users need to record a brief script in their own voice after providing their consent. This recording is then used to create a digital copy of the user’s voice, which the AI Assistant will use to handle incoming calls.

While users can edit the introductory greeting template for system-generated voices, Truecaller has restricted this capability for personal voice recordings. This restriction is intended to ensure transparency, making it clear to callers that they are hearing a digital version of the user’s voice. However, follow-up responses can still be customized according to user preferences.

Security and Compliance

Truecaller ensures that the new feature adheres to security standards. Microsoft’s Personal Voice technology includes watermarks in the synthetic speech, which can be detected by specific tools, ensuring that the audio is identifiable as digitally created.

Raphael Mimoun, Product Director and General Manager of Truecaller Israel, expressed optimism about the new feature, stating, “We firmly believe that the personal voice feature will revolutionize the way our users manage their calls and elevate their overall experience with Truecaller Assistant. We look forward to further exploring the potential of AI-powered voice technologies in partnership with Microsoft and delivering even more innovative solutions to our global user base.”

Rollout Plan

The personal voice feature is set to roll out over the next few weeks, starting with the U.S., Canada, Australia, South Africa, India, Sweden, and Chile. Initially, it will be available to public beta users, with a broader release planned for all users in these eligible markets.

With this innovative feature, Truecaller is not only enhancing user experience but also pushing the boundaries of what AI can achieve in everyday applications. As AI continues to evolve, such advancements are likely to become more integrated into our daily lives, offering both convenience and a glimpse into the future of technology.
