Apple AirTag 2 Expected in Mid-2025: Anticipated Features and Improvements

Apple is reportedly gearing up to release the second generation of its AirTag, with a potential launch slated for mid-2025. The original AirTag, introduced three years ago, revolutionized personal item tracking with its seamless integration with iPhones. Since then, the product line has seen minimal changes, but a new iteration is on the horizon.

According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple is preparing the AirTag 2, internally known as B589. The company is currently conducting test runs with its manufacturing partners in Asia to ensure a smooth production process and to prevent any delays or issues.

While detailed features of the AirTag 2 remain under wraps, Gurman suggests that enhanced location tracking is a likely upgrade. This improvement would make it even easier to locate lost items such as keys, bags, and luggage.

There are also hopes that Apple will introduce hardware features to curb the misuse of AirTags for stalking and other illicit activities. Although Apple has implemented several software-based safety measures, stronger hardware could further protect users.

One anticipated feature is a louder speaker. Current AirTags emit sound when separated from their paired device and can be made to ring if nearby phones detect an unfamiliar AirTag. A louder speaker would improve the device’s audibility, making it easier to find even if hidden. This enhancement would also benefit legitimate tracking, complementing traditional location and ultra-wideband tracking.

Improved battery life is another desired enhancement. Users who leave AirTags in bags or suitcases for extended periods would appreciate longer-lasting batteries or alerts when the battery is low. Additionally, a credit card-shaped AirTag could be useful for wallets, purses, laptop cases, and other slim items.

Enhanced support for Android devices is also on the wish list. This improvement would require collaboration between Apple and Google, possibly facilitated by Google’s new Find My Network.

With these potential advancements, the Apple AirTag 2 promises significant improvements in functionality and safety, making its anticipated mid-2025 release highly awaited.
