Google Gemini Introduces New Voice Option

Google has been making continuous improvements to its Gemini language model, and the latest update suggests the addition of a new voice interface. Currently, the new voice is being tested exclusively on Android devices, with iOS and web versions not yet included in the trial.

Google Gemini, which is poised to potentially replace Google Assistant, has so far offered only one voice option. However, a recent report from 9to5Google indicates that Google is working on adding more voice options for Gemini. This development aligns with the announcements made at this year’s Google I/O conference, where the company revealed its plans to introduce a wider selection of realistic voice options for users.

Google Assistant has provided around a dozen different voice choices, but Gemini, the generative AI assistant, has only had a single voice until now. The new update is set to change this, with Gemini beginning to roll out a new female-sounding voice. This change appears to be in a limited test phase and is not yet globally available.

The initial discovery of Google’s work on a new voice setting for Gemini was made about a month ago, although the feature was not functional at that time. The new setting offered an option to choose between two voices, distinct from Assistant’s voice settings. Now, Gemini’s new voice is starting to be available, adding a more natural and less robotic sound compared to the existing voice.

Despite the excitement, the new voice feature is currently only available on Android phones. Users of iOS and the web client will have to wait for future updates to experience the new voice options. Additionally, there is no current option to revert to the previous voice once the new voice is activated.

This update represents a significant step for Google in enhancing the user experience of its digital assistants. The ability to customize the assistant’s voice is a welcomed feature, contributing to a more personalized interaction. The introduction of a new female voice for Gemini could also help Google compete with other AI assistants like GPT-4, which has recently showcased new voices.

As the new Gemini voices are still in the testing phase, it is unclear when they will be widely available or how many options will be offered. However, given that Google Assistant provides 12 different voice options, it is likely that Gemini will eventually offer a similar variety.

In summary, while the new voice feature for Google Gemini is currently in a limited trial and available only to Android users, it marks an important milestone in the evolution of Google’s AI assistant capabilities. Users can look forward to more voice customization options in the future as the technology continues to develop.
