Samsung has revealed a screen designed for XR headsets, featuring innovative OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon) technology. Boasting the world’s first OLEDoS display with an RGB sub-pixel structure, the 1.03-inch square screen promises an impressive 3,500 pixels per inch (ppi). While Samsung hasn’t disclosed the exact resolution, estimates suggest it could be around 2,550 x 2,550. This OLED display, developed by eMagin, a company recently acquired by Samsung, eliminates the need for a separate light source, delivering true-to-life visuals. The absence of details on the refresh rate has led to speculation, with some suggesting 90 Hz. The unveiling of this advanced display hints at the possibility of Samsung incorporating it into an upcoming XR headset, especially as competitors like Apple have entered the XR market. Given Qualcomm’s recent announcement of the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset for XR headsets, it’s conceivable that Samsung’s device may leverage this powerful platform, potentially running a specialized version of Android tailored for XR headsets.
