Threads Introduces Live Scores for Sports Games, Starting with NBA

Published

on

Threads, the Instagram counterpart to Twitter, is stepping up its game with the addition of live scores for sports games. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Friday that Threads has begun testing live scores for NBA games and intends to expand its support to include other leagues in the future.

This move comes as Threads continues to challenge X, a platform that has offered live scores for sports games for nearly a decade. With this new feature, Threads aims to attract users who typically rely on X for live game discussions and real-time updates. But Threads isn’t just delivering live scores—users can also tap on a team’s logo to join the conversation about that specific team and connect with fellow fans.

According to TechCrunch, Threads believes that this new feature will simplify the process for users to engage in discussions about their favorite teams. The company highlights basketball as one of the most popular topics on the platform, with NBA Threads emerging as one of its most active sports communities. The goal behind this feature is to establish Threads as the go-to destination for sports discourse.

With Threads, users can search for a game within one day of its start time to view the schedule. During the game, they can search for it to get live updates on the current score. Once the game concludes, users can search for it to see the final score.

The addition of live scores represents Threads’ latest endeavor to compete with X. Just this week, Threads rolled out its “trending now” feature to all U.S. users. This feature aligns Threads more closely with X by enabling users to discover timely conversations happening on the platform.

As Threads continues to innovate and expand its offerings, it positions itself as a formidable contender in the realm of social media platforms for sports enthusiasts.

AltStore PAL: An Alternative iOS App Store Launches

Published

on

By

After a successful beta test, AltStore PAL, a third-party iOS app store, has officially launched in the European Union, marking a significant milestone in the region’s digital landscape. This achievement is attributed to Apple’s compliance with the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which mandates the allowance of apps from competing stores on iOS devices.

AltStore PAL offers European users an alternative to the traditional Apple App Store, enabling them to explore a diverse range of applications beyond Apple’s ecosystem. The marketplace, available for an annual subscription of €1.50 (plus tax), introduces innovative apps like Delta, a Nintendo emulator, and Clip, a clipboard manager, developed by Riley Testut and Shane Gill.

Installation of AltStore PAL involves navigating through Apple’s security measures, reflecting the company’s cautious approach towards third-party app distribution. However, with persistence, users can successfully install the store, which leverages Apple’s new Web Distribution system to ensure compatibility with iOS 17.4 and later versions.

Delta, capable of emulating various Nintendo gaming consoles, including NES, SNES, and Nintendo DS, presents users with an array of gaming possibilities. Clip, although challenged by Apple’s restrictions, offers a robust clipboard management solution. The integration with Patreon allows developers to monetize their apps, providing incentives for crowd-sourced funding and beta testing.

AltStore PAL’s emergence signifies a shift in the iOS app landscape, offering developers and users alike a platform for innovation and exploration outside the confines of Apple’s stringent App Store guidelines. Unlike Apple’s centralized model, AltStore PAL embraces a decentralized approach, empowering developers to self-host their applications and users to access software from various sources.

As the first alternative app store for iOS devices in Europe, AltStore PAL paves the way for a more diverse and dynamic app ecosystem, where creativity and choice flourish under the umbrella of regulatory compliance and technological innovation.

TechCrunch has confirmed that LinkedIn is currently working on a Premium Company Page subscription, which promises AI-powered content creation tools alongside features aimed at boosting follower counts and enhancing company profiles. This move underscores LinkedIn’s ongoing efforts to evolve its business model under Microsoft’s ownership while simultaneously enhancing its utility for users.

For years, LinkedIn has faced criticism for fostering an environment rife with shameless self-promotion and concerns over data privacy. However, amidst the backdrop of increasing scrutiny and evolving landscapes on other social platforms, LinkedIn sees an opportunity to establish itself as a trusted and secure space for professionals. The platform aims to serve as a definitive social profile repository for individuals and businesses alike, offering a sanctuary from the chaos of disinformation and algorithmic manipulation prevalent elsewhere.

LinkedIn discreetly unveiled details about its Premium Company Page subscription just six days ago, garnering minimal attention initially. However, astute observers, including a marketing consultant, took note, prompting LinkedIn to confirm the initiative to TechCrunch. According to Suzi Owens, LinkedIn’s senior director of communications, the Premium Company Page is designed to empower small-to-medium businesses to attract customers, enhance credibility, and differentiate themselves in the market.

While specific pricing details remain undisclosed, eligible page administrators have reportedly been presented with subscription options starting at $99.99 per month per Page, with discounts available for annual subscriptions. This premium offering joins a robust lineup of LinkedIn’s tailored services, catering to various organizational needs, including recruitment, business intelligence, and professional development.

Premium subscriptions constitute a substantial portion of LinkedIn’s revenue stream, with Premium user subscriptions alone reaching $1.7 billion in 2023, marking a 25% year-on-year growth. The introduction of the Premium Company Page subscription reflects LinkedIn’s commitment to leveraging its platform mechanics, such as visitor analytics, call-to-action buttons, and testimonials, to empower businesses in their outreach efforts.

Furthermore, the integration of AI-driven content creation tools underscores LinkedIn’s ongoing endeavor to enhance user experience through innovative technology. Leveraging Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI, LinkedIn seeks to offer cutting-edge solutions that streamline content creation processes and elevate the quality of engagement on the platform.

Lastly, as part of LinkedIn’s recent emphasis on verification, Premium Company Pages will be distinguished by a golden badge, symbolizing authenticity and credibility. This initiative aligns with LinkedIn’s broader mission to foster a trusted ecosystem where professionals can connect, collaborate, and thrive.

In summary, LinkedIn’s introduction of the Premium Company Page subscription represents a strategic move to cater to the evolving needs of businesses while reaffirming its position as the premier platform for professional networking and growth. With AI-powered content creation and enhanced features, LinkedIn aims to empower businesses to effectively engage with their audience, drive growth, and establish lasting credibility in the digital landscape.
