Google Play Store Now Highlights Apps with Account Deletion Options

In a move to enhance user control over personal data, the Google Play Store has introduced a new feature: a badge indicating apps that offer account deletion options. This development aims to simplify the process of requesting data or account deletion, even if the app has been uninstalled.

Google has mandated that apps enabling user account creation must also facilitate account and data deletion both within the app and via the web. App developers must comply with this rule by May 31, 2024. The enforcement of this policy is intended to ensure greater transparency and user control over personal data.

Ahead of this deadline, the “Account deletion available” badge has gone live in the Google Play Store. This badge appears in the Data Safety section of app listings, clearly indicating to users which apps provide easy data or account deletion options.

Implementation and Compliance

Last year, Google announced this policy change, emphasizing the need for apps to support account deletion if they allow account creation. The recent introduction of the data deletion badge marks a significant step in the implementation of this policy. Android Authority contributor Assemble Debug first noticed the appearance of this badge in app listings.

Since December 2023, Google has been actively urging developers to include information about account deletion in their Play Store listings. Developers can request an extension until May 31, 2024. After this date, non-compliant apps may face strict enforcement actions, potentially including removal from the Play Store.

User-Friendly Data Deletion

The primary objective of Google’s data deletion policy is to provide users with straightforward options for deleting their data and accounts without needing to reinstall uninstalled apps. This policy requires developers to offer deletion options both within their apps and on the web. Developers who need to retain certain data for legitimate reasons, such as regulatory compliance, must clearly disclose their data retention practices.

The new data deletion badge is a significant step toward empowering users with more control over their personal data. Have you noticed the new data deletion highlights in the Google Play Store? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below.

YouTube Music Introduces ‘Hum to Search’ Feature on Android

YouTube Music has unveiled a new feature for its Android app that promises to revolutionize how users identify songs. The feature, aptly named “Hum to Search,” allows users to find songs by simply humming, singing, whistling, or playing a recording of a melody. This innovation aims to be a strong competitor to Shazam and other similar services.

How to Use ‘Hum to Search’

If you have the latest update of the YouTube Music app, you’ll notice a new waveform icon next to the microphone icon when you tap the search button in the upper right corner. This waveform icon is your gateway to the ‘Hum to Search’ feature. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use it:

1. Open the YouTube Music App: Launch the app on your Android device.

2. Tap the Search Icon: Locate and tap the search button, typically represented by a magnifying glass.

3. Look for the Waveform Icon: Next to the search bar or the microphone icon, you’ll see a new waveform icon. This icon activates the ‘Hum to Search’ feature.

4. Hum, Sing, or Whistle the Tune: Press and hold the waveform icon, then start humming, singing, or whistling the melody of the song you’re trying to identify. The clearer and longer the melody, the better the app’s accuracy.

5. View the Results: After you finish, YouTube Music will analyze the audio and display potential song matches. Tap on the most likely match to see the full song and artist information.

Performance and Accuracy

During testing, the feature demonstrated impressive capabilities, swiftly identifying recordings with remarkable speed. When it came to humming, singing, or whistling, YouTube Music accurately identified most of the songs, though there were a few amusing inaccuracies.

A New Era for Music Discovery

The addition of ‘Hum to Search’ brings YouTube Music in line with other leading music identification services, providing a convenient and innovative tool for users who often find themselves struggling to recall song lyrics. This feature is a significant enhancement for Android users who rely on YouTube Music for discovering new music, making it easier than ever to find songs with just a few notes.

With this new feature, YouTube Music strengthens its position as a comprehensive music streaming service, offering advanced tools for music discovery and identification.
