Google Chat Introduces Highly-Requested Voice Messaging Feature

In a move to keep pace with its competitors, Google Chat, the business-focused messaging app, has unveiled its latest update—a voice messaging feature. This long-awaited addition is set to be rolled out gradually over the next month.
The decision to incorporate voice messaging into Google Chat comes as no surprise, considering the widespread use of similar features in other messaging platforms. Described as “highly requested” in a recent post on the Workspace Updates blog, this enhancement aims to meet the demands of users seeking more diverse communication options within the app.
Initially, the voice messaging feature will be available exclusively to certain tiers of Google Workspace tailored for enterprises. Users outside the business sphere will have to wait for broader accessibility.
However, there are limitations even for those who gain access to the new feature. Initially, voice messaging will only be accessible on Chat mobile, restricting users from utilizing it on the web version. Nevertheless, web users will still be able to listen to voice messages sent by their mobile counterparts.
Functionally, the feature operates similarly to voice messaging features on other platforms. Users can initiate recording by tapping the microphone icon, stop recording by tapping it again, and then choose from options such as playback, deletion, or sending.
While Google may seem tardy in implementing voice messaging in 2024 compared to its competitors, there’s a promising update on the horizon. The announcement hints at the addition of transcription capabilities for voice messages in the near future. This development could give Google Chat an edge, particularly in environments where listening to audio messages may not be feasible.
As Google Chat continues to evolve, these enhancements underscore its commitment to providing a comprehensive and competitive messaging experience for its users.
